All parents hope and dream that their kids will become productive members of society when they grow up. For many, this will mean finding a good paying job. But, for parents with children with cognitive developmental disabilities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder ("ASD"), this is often a dream that far too many will never ascertain.
An estimated 500,000 kids with ASD are expected to reach adulthood within the next ten years. These adults will hit the work force and post-secondary education market like a brick with no jobs or real opportunities to have an independent life.
According to a study published in the June 2012 issue of Pediatrics, adults with ASD face a greater than 50 percent chance of being unemployed or not going to college compared with those without disabilities. The study goes on to find that more than half of adults with ASD will be unemployed or have no college or technical training a mere two years after high school. Autism Job Board was started just to combat this.
